Beirut - Tripod Tues 24th

Not quite as dapper as I was expecting, Zach Condon could well have just strolled out from the audience at Tripod, and so casual his appearance and manner one hand may have remained in his pocket had he not needed them both.

That's not to say the music was half arsed. Anything but. He finds an impossibly perfect, joyous sound with ukuleles, drums, accordions and of course, the trumpets. Oh the trumpets! Majestic and sprightly but yet at times so damn heartbreaking. The song Elephant Gun is like Standing arm in arm with your comrades, swaying slightly in silent nostalgia of whatever has past, whiskey warm in your belly, a tear in your eye, looking at some ridiculous sunset, thinking, that wasn't so bad after all. On second thoughts I may have just absorbed that image from the fabulous video.

If you are wondering how our Dublin crowd would sing along at certain musical solos ( I was. It's all so damn catchy you cant help not), it was a mixture of "nah, nah, na nah's" and if I remember correctly there may have been a few "la, la la's" thrown in for good measure. Quite loud too. Go Dublin.

Incidentally, doing his rounds of every event in town recently, Mr Sean Penn was there in...eh...yellow trousers.
